Frequently Asked Questions
Is it normal for the rattan to feel stiff and brittle when I first receive it?
Yes, it is perfectly normal. Natural rattan fibers are brittle when dry. Please soak the webbing in warm water for about 30 minutes before use. This makes it soft and pliable for easy cutting and shaping. Once installed, it will shrink and tighten as it dries, resulting in a professional, taut finish.
Can this rattan webbing be stained or painted?
Yes! Since this is 100% natural rattan, it is porous and accepts stains or paints very well. If you want to keep the natural texture, an oil-based stain is recommended. For a solid color look, spray paint works best. We recommend applying the finish after the rattan is installed and completely dry.
How do I prevent the rattan from sagging or loosening after installation?
The secret is "wet installation." After soaking for 30 minutes, install the webbing while it is still damp and flexible. Stretch it slightly as you staple or secure it to the frame. As the water evaporates, the rattan will shrink and naturally tighten, leaving you with a smooth, firm surface.
What should I do if there are small burrs or fuzz on the surface?
Small burrs are a natural characteristic of rattan. Once your project is dry, you can lightly sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper (around 220 grit). Alternatively, you can quickly pass a lighter flame over the surface to singe off the fuzz. Applying a coat of wax or lacquer will also result in a much smoother touch.
